
babyTEL offers a rich set of features including some that are not offered by your telephone company.

Call waiting
Avoid missing important calls.
Call Waiting lets you know when there is a second call while you're on the phone and allows you to switch between the two calls.
When a second call arrives, you will hear a distinct ring on the line. If your telephone set has a display screen, the caller's number is displayed. You can then decide whether to take the call or not.
Switching between calls
During your conversation, when you hear the ring, press the flash hook (switch hook or link button). The first call will be placed on hold and you will be connected to the second call. To return to the previous conversation, press the flash hook again. You can repeat this as often as you like. To end the first call before answering the second, simply hang up and your phone will ring with the second call.
Caller ID
Manage your time better by answering only the calls you want.
If your telephone set has a display screen you can see the name and number of the person calling. You can then decide whether to answer or not. If the caller has blocked his name/number from being displayed, the words "Private Number - Private Name" will appear on the screen. If you choose not to answer and you have a subscription to the babyMAIL service, callers will be transferred to your mailbox where they can leave a message for you.

Call Hold
No more covering the mouthpiece to avoid being heard.
To put a call on hold, quickly press and release your telephones flash hook button or use the hold button, if available. While on hold, the other party will not be able to hear you, allowing you to speak to someone nearby in private, take a call on another line or answer the door. A flashing light or other display will ensure you do not forget about the held call, just press the button again to resume the conversation when you are ready.
Call forwarding
Receive your calls wherever you want.
You can forward your calls to any telephone number or cell phone of your choice. If your calls to the forwarded number go unanswered, the caller will be transferred to your babyMAIL mailbox where they can leave a message for you.
Works with your office Automated Attendant.
Wondering how to get your calls at your office extension when an Automated Attendant is always answering? No problem. When setting up your Call forwarding number, simply enter the phone number of your office Automated Attendant followed by a few pauses (represented by the letter p) and then whatever keystrokes your Automated Attendant requires to transfer the caller to your extension. You will need to experiment with the number of pauses needed. Each letter p inserted represents a 1.5 second pause.
Service Continuity Number
Receive your calls even if your Internet service is interrupted...
The Service Continuity Number ensures that your calls will reach you even if your equipment fails. You can define a number to which all your calls will be forwarded if your babyBOX stops communicating with our network due to a problem at your end such as a power failure, equipment malfunction or Internet problem.
Call return
Automatically dial your last caller.
Regardless of whether the call was answered or not, babyTEL always remembers the last number that called you. Call Return enables you to return the call easily. Lift the telephone receiver and dial *69. babyTEL will automatically dial the last number that called you. With babyTEL, it does not cost you extra to use the Call Return feature.
This feature may not be available with certain telephone adapters.
Repeat dialing
Automatically monitor a busy line.
Repeat dialing saves you the trouble of having to dial repeatedly to get through to a busy number. babyTEL will do it for you. It does not cost you extra to use the Repeat dialing feature.

Do not disturb
When you need peace and quiet...
If you do not wish to be disturbed for a period of time, you can activate the Do not disturb feature. When enabled, all your calls are sent to your voicemail directly where callers can leave a message for you. You can process their messages at your leisure. When you are ready to make yourself available, disable the feature.
To enable/disable Do not disturb, login to your babyTEL online account and select the option from the 'Telephony Feature Settings' sub-menu.
Conference calling
Three heads are better than two.
During a conversation, either party can add a third individual to the discussion. There is no extra charge to use the conference calling feature. Note however that for billing purposes, each person called in the conference is treated as a separate call and is billed according to whether it is a local or long distance call.
Short number dialing
It's just like dialing an extension
If you call another number that starts with the same few numbers as your babyTEL number, just dial the last few digits that are different and we will complete the number for you.
For example, if your number is 514-448-1212 and you want to call 514-448-5000, you can simply dial 5000. If you are using the babyBOX (telephone adapter) dial a pound '#' at the end to skip the timeout delay and have your call initiated immediately.
You can dial as few as 4 digits and we will complete the number for you.
Outcall control
Never worry about making unintended long distance calls.
Take control of your long-distance bill. Use this feature from babyTEL to disable or enable calls to international and other long-distance destinations. Simply login to your babyTEL web account and click on the Telephone Feature Settings menu to access this feature.
You can block calls to international destinations and to long-distance destinations separately.
You can also block calls to Directory Assistance. So use a free online directory service and save by blocking Directory Assistance calls on your babyTEL account.
Voicemail
All the standard features and some new features - free, included, and easy to use.
Basic function: When someone calls you and your number is busy, or there's no answer, the caller is transferred to your mailbox where they listen to your greeting and can leave you a message.
Message options: Messages being left in your mailbox can be reviewed and re-recorded by the caller if necessary, and can also be marked Urgent and/or Private.
Retrieving messages: You can call into your mailbox and listen to your messages from any telephone, or if you prefer, you can have a copy of your voice messages forwarded to your email inbox where you can listen to them on your computer. Please see voice-to-email feature.
Message Storage: Up to three hundred messages can be stored in your mailbox at any time. When using the voice-to-email feature, messages are stored in your mailbox for three days. Using the regular voicemail service, messages are stored for thirty days. You can delete your messages at any time or extend their storage time.

Why should a voice message be any different from other mail?
When you register for the first time to your babyMAIL account, you can choose the voice-to-email option to have all your voice messages forwarded to your email address. This option is sometimes called "unified messaging" because it allows you to consolidate all your messages (voice, emails, fax) in your computer inbox. Voicemail messages arrive in your email inbox as standard emails with an attachment. When you click on the attachment, the message plays on your computer providing it is equipped for sound. These messages can then be permanently saved and catalogued, or deleted, just like any other email.
If you choose voice-to-email, your messages will be stored in your telephone mailbox for three days, during which time you can also listen to them over the phone. After this time, messages are deleted from your telephone mailbox. This is done so that your telephone mailbox does not get cluttered when you are primarily using your computer to retrieve your messages. Messages in your email inbox can be stored as long as you want.
Toll Free Number
Give your customers an easier way to reach you.
babyTEL's toll free service is your solution if you conduct business in North America. By simply adding a toll free number to a babyTEL plan, your customers and suppliers can call you for free.
Getting a toll free number is a simple two step process. First, choose a babyTEL plan that meets your needs and complete the sign up process. Second, access your account and add a toll free number. Presto! Your customers and suppliers are ready to start calling you for free!
Virtual Phone Number
Give yourself a telephone presence in other cities.
With babyTEL you are no longer restricted to one telephone number per line. You can select additional numbers in other local calling areas throughout Canada and the U.S. A call to any of these numbers will ring your primary babyTEL number. These additional numbers are called Virtual Phone Numbers.
With a babyTEL Virtual Phone Number, you can have local numbers in different cities allowing those who call you from those cities to reach you for the price of a local phone call. Whether it is for your children who are away at college, your business associates or your family back home, a virtual number is a way for you to reach out to those who want to reach you.
When you subscribe to a Virtual Phone Number with babyTEL you can choose numbers in any city where we offer service. All calls to any of your Virtual Numbers will ring your main babyTEL line as if the caller dialed your primary number. Think of Virtual Numbers as aliases for your primary number. You can have as many aliases as you like and the number becomes active the minute you subscribe to it.

With babyTEL, you have the flexibility of using your laptop when travelling or your telephone set at home to make and receive calls on the same number.
babyTEL allows you to connect up to 3 different devices to the same telephone number. For each device, you have the choice of using either a Softphone or a Telephone Adapter (babyBOX).
Now you can choose your telephone connections in the way that best suits your lifestyle. For example, you can have a babyBOX at home connected to your regular telephone set, a Softphone on your laptop for when you are on the road, and another babyBOX at the cottage or Softphone on your office Desktop -whichever suits you best. When someone calls your number, babyTEL will ring all your connected devices.
Softphone
The babyTEL Softphone is software that can be downloaded to your PC to simulate a telephone. It allows you to make or receive calls directly from your PC without a physical telephone or any other additional hardware. All babyTEL features are available when using the Softphone.
To place outgoing calls, simply enter the number to be called by either using your mouse to click on the softphone's keypad or use your PC keyboard. Incoming calls will ring on your PC speakers or earphones.
For best results, babyTEL recommends that a quality headset with microphone be utilized with your PC.
External loud speakers and separate microphones may also be used. Internal PC speakers may be used but sound quality may be diminished.

411 Service
Listed number
When you are assigned your babyTEL telephone number you have the option to list it with 411 in the same way you are listed with a conventional number. There is no extra charge for having your number listed.
Unlisted number
If you prefer not to list your number with 411, then simply indicate this during sign-up. There is no extra charge for having an unlisted number.
Calling 411
Dial 411 to access business, residential and government listings in Canada and the U.S. During a single telephone call you can make up to three inquiries. The cost per call is only $1.00.
Online account management
Manage your account online
With babyTEL you can manage and update your account information and preferences directly from our website. You can update your credit card information, change your password or modify other account settings online, securely. Simply log in to your account and select the appropriate menu from the 'My Account' or 'My babyTEL Service' sections, then make the necessary changes, save and log out.
Real-time online billing information
Simply log in, then select My Transaction from the Account menu to view your bill. Make a chargeable babyTEL call and watch your bill update automatically and instantaneously. There's virtually no delay.
Real-time online call log
Simply log in, then select My Call Log from the Account menu. View your call log to see details of all the calls you made, the calls you received, duration and cost. If you make a call while the log is in view, the details will appear as soon as you hang up.
Emergency backup line
Keeping your regular telephone line? Use it as a backup in case of power outage or other emergencies.
This feature allows you to connect a traditional telephone line or landline to the babyBOX.
Having a second line from a second provider is easy when one of these lines is from babyTEL. If you decide to keep your landline you will not be left wondering which phone connects to which jack. Simply connect your landline into the babyBOX and use the same phone to make and receive calls on both your landline and Internet line.
When you use a landline as backup, you gain the assurance of knowing that you can continue to make calls even if your Internet connection is down. If for some reason the babyBOX is unable to make an Internet call, it will automatically switch to the backup line and complete your call. The babyBOX can also automatically use your backup line whenever you dial 911 or you can force it to use the backup line by dialing a short code before the number you are calling.
With all the feature rich functionality of your babyTEL line, you do not need anything more than a basic landline service for your backup line. Save on the cost of the backup line by making sure you are not subscribed to services you no longer need.
